Tullahoma Campaign June 24-July 4, 1863
The Battle for Hoovers Gap
Union Major General William S. Rosecrans' plan to reach Manchester and cut off a Confederate retreat to Chattanooga depended upon capturing Hoover's Gap. In the early afternoon of June 24, Colonel John T. Wilder and his brigade of 2000 mounted infantry brushed aside a small force of Confederate cavalry, elements of the 1st and 3rd Kentucky, and took up positions to hold the area. The 72nd Indiana, one of Wilder's units, was placed here, at what is now Beech Grove Cemetery. As the engagement raged, elements from Confederate Brigadier General William Bate's brigade, lasted till early evening. The Federals held.
In his official report Brigadier General William B. Bate wrote that the battle of the 24th "was a bright day for the glory of our arms, but a sad one when we consider the loss of the many gallant spirits who sealed with their blood their devotion to our cause."
