Nicholas J. Pirro had been involved in Onondaga County Government service for over 40 years and upon announcement of his retirement as County Executive, the City of Syracuse, decided to rename the Oncenter Convention Center in his honor.

Nicholas J. Pirro was deeply involved in Onondaga County politics since the age of 25. He started his County career on the Onondaga County Board of Supervisors, then as Chairman of the Health Committee and Minority Leader of the House. Soon after, he was elected by his peers as Chairman of the County Legislature. While in the County Legislature, he accomplished many goals along with being active in many community organizations. On January 1st 1988, he began his first term as County Executive for Onondaga County and served in that capacity for five terms, ending his career on a high note by retiring as County Executive at the end of 2007.
