The design for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was chosen from a slew of over 1,400 entries. The winning entry was authored by 21-year-old Yale University architecture student, Maya Lin. When the monument was originally installed it was very controversial as the form was a dark gash in the landscape. Later a figurative grouping of soldiers was included to appease those with more traditional tastes. For more information about the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, see the Wikipedia entry.
