Geology sign on crater rim trail.
Marker Name: Northwest Rift Zone
Marker Text: The Northwest flank of Newberry Volcano is cut by a system of northwest trending fissures (cracks). Fissures have been traced nearly 17 miles from East Lake in Newberry Crater northwestward across Green Mountain. These fissures have acted as a zone of weakness along which molten rock (magma) reached the surface. About 6,200 years ago several eruptive periods formed the cinder cones, spatter cones, and lava flows shown on the map. Across U.S. Highway 97 you can see a fault scarp and cinder cones which are part of the fissure system.
NOTE - The date of about 6,200 is a C14 date. Since these signs were originally done it has become possible to calibrate C14 to calendar dates. Today the commonly used age in scientific publications for eruptions along the NW Rift Zone is 7,000 calendar years.
