Lincoln county was formed in 1866 as a reorganization of Shorter county which had been established in 1860 but had never carried out any county business. The first courthouse, constructed in 1876, needed to be replaced and a bond issue for a new building was passed in 1919. Although construction began in 1921 there were financial difficulties and the stone Classical Revival building was not completed until 1924.
The courthouse occupies a large square in downtown North Platte.
