The first lookout on Lava Butte was constructed in 1931. The original lookout was replaced in 1957 and in 1962 the area beneath the tower was enclosed with windows and a small visitor area was constructed which included a painted mural describing the view. In 1998 a new lookout was constructed and it also included a glass enclosed visitor area beneath the lookout. Above the windows there is an annotated photographic mural showing the view.

The lookout is at the summit of Lava Butte adjacent to U.S. Hwy. 97 and is reached by a road which spirals to the summit of the butte.
