The early settlement of Plum Creek, on the Overland Trail, and with a bridge across the Platte river, was an undisputed choice for County seat when Dawson County was organized in 1871. In 1889 the name of the fast growing town was changed to Lexington.
The first courthouse, built in 1874 was replaced by this stone Beaux arts building in 1913. The courthouse occupies a square on the north edge of downtown Lexington. William F. Gernandt, the architect, designed several other Nebraska Courthouses.
