The ferry has been in operation since 1827. The terminal makes a good point for exploring historic Algiers Point.

"The Algiers-Canal Street Ferry has been in continuous operation since 1827, when the State legislature gave exclusive rights to Auguste Coycault and Barzile Gosselin to operate a steam ferry boat. From this single crossing, a network of crossings developed inking Algiers with the East bank. Today, the Algiers-Canal Street Ferry still carries passengers and vehicles back and forth across the river."
