Carew Tower was designed by the firm Shreve, Lamb & Harmon Associates in 1929, right before the Great Depression. Construction would go on, however, through the hardship and be completed in 1931, although some details were scaled back. The building served as a model for one of the architects' subsequent buildings - The Empire State Building in New York City.
Housed in the building from the very start is the exquisitely-styled Netherland Plaza Hotel, now run by Hilton. Space in the bottom floors of the tallest tower is the Tower Place mall, and an observation deck can be found at the 48th floor.
