The USS Gambier Bay (CVE-73) was a Casablanca class escort carrier of the United States Navy. Named for Gambier Bay on Admiralty Island in Southeast Alaska, she was originally classified AVG-73, was reclassified ACV-73 on 20 August 1942 and again reclassified CVE-73 on 15 July 1943. Built at Kaiser Company, Inc.’s shipyard in Vancouver, Washington, USS Gambier Bay (CVE-73) was commissioned at Astoria, Oregon, 28 December 1943, Captain Hugh H. Goodwin in command.. On the morning of October 25, 1945, during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, USS Gambier Bay (CVE-73) was sunk by Japanese warships in the Battle off Samar. 137 sailors and aircrew were lost. Of the 800 survivors most were in the water for two days before being rescued.
Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery is situated in the San Diego, California, area on the Fort Rosecrans Military Reservation, Point Loma, California. The cemetery is located approximately 10 miles west of downtown San Diego, overlooking the bay and the city. Fort Rosecrans is named after William Starke Rosecrans, a Union general in the American Civil War. This memorial is located in the east central section of the cemetery.
