The Weisman Museum is a teaching museum for the U of M campus and emphasizes early 20th century art as well as contemporary art. The collection is especially rich in modernist works.
The museum building by deconstructivist architect Frank Gehry is, itself, considered a work of art. From the Mississippi River-facing side, the museum displays abstract geometric forms and brilliant stainless steel surfaces, while from the campus-facing side, it presents a more staid brick facade which is more in keeping with the other campus buildings. Designed in 1993, this building could be said to be a prototype for Gehry's museum in Bilbao, Spain.
