Herman Melville was an American author, best-known for his novels of the sea and his masterpiece Moby Dick (1851). The work was only recognized as a masterpiece 30 years after Melville's death. [3]

According to Americanheritage.com [2] Melville spent a couple of months in 1949 at No. 25 Craven St while he tried to find an English publisher for his novel White-Jacket.
