USS Bennington (PG-4), also known as "Gunboat No. 4," was a gunboat of the United States Navy. Named for the town of Bennington, Vermont, she was laid down in June, 1888 at the Delaware River Iron Works in Chester, Pennsylvania; launched on 3 June 1890; sponsored by Miss Anne Aston; and commissioned at the New York Navy Yard on 20 June 1891, with Commander Royal B. Bradford in command.
On the morning of 21 July 1905, while preparing to get underway in San Diego Bay, two boilers burst showering the vessel with live steam and scalding water. The ship sank but was subsequently refloated. 1 officer (Ensign Newman K. Perry) and 65 men were killed. This memorial was erected by the officers and men of the US Navy Pacific Fleet to commemorate the loss of their shipmates. The monument was dedicated on January 7, 1908.
