This 600-foot long structure was built in 1935 as a WPA project to replace the 1877 dam that replaced the original 1848 dam, which was built to provide a stable impoundment of the DuPage River for the I&M Canal to cross (instead of an aqueduct).

The spillway continues its function of providing a stable water elevation for the DuPage River. The spillway is 165 feet long and 11.5 feet high with a slope of 2.5:1.
