Founded with an agricultural land grant in 1867. It is located in the twin-cities of Urbana and Champaign in east central Illinois. It's about two-and-a-half hours drive south of Chicago and three hours drive east of St. Louis, in the middle of a very flat, agricultural landscape. It is he largest of three University of Illinois campuses--the others being in Springfield and Chicago. It has one of the largest libraries in the world. The university has dozens of graduate programs and is world famous for its research program.
