Opaeka'a means "rolling shrimp" in Hawaiian. Apparently, in old days, shrimp could be found in the stream at the base of the falls.
Located off the north branch of the Wailua River, this fall is not accessible by river or trail. An overlook, however, off Kuamo'o Road provides an excellent and safe viewing area. The falls flow year-round, unlike many waterfalls on the island that are dependent on heavy rains.
Directions: From Hwy 56 in Wailua (about 2.5 miles south of Kapa'a), turn west on Kuamo'o Rd. (Hwy 580) towards the signed 'Opaeka'a Falls viewpoint. Drive 1.5 miles to the viewpoint on the right. For the trailhead to the base of the falls, continue on Kuamo'o Rd. for 0.4 miles past the viewpoint to a turnout on the right (opposite some houses)
