This first drive-thru window opened on Jan. 24, 1975. The concept was developed because the commander of nearby Fort Huachuca (US Army) at the time didn't want his soldiers to be seen in town in fatigues (work or utility uniforms). They weren't allowed to be seen in public with them on. The McDonald's owner got around this by creating the first drive-thru window so the GIs wouldn't violate the fort commander's orders. In addition to the extra signage outside indicating this "first", there are pictures inside on the walls commemorating it as well.
