From 1929 to 1932, President and Mrs. Hoover spent weekends at Rapidan Camp, a retreat they built at the head of the Rapidan River in what is now part of Shenandoah National Park.

The outdoor fireplace was used for outdoor photo ops and had logs that served as benches surrounding the hearth.

To visit this site, you can hike down to the Camp on your own or you can check at the Byrd Visitor Center, milepost 51 on Skyline Drive, to see when guided tours are being offered.

(Note: The old photo of the chimney in the gallery is from the NPS photo archives and available for download.)
