John Smith was a veteran of the 1st Continental Line (New Jersey.) He and his wife Sarah Snyder are buried in Smith's Burying Ground north of New Albany, Ohio. To the left of John's original sandstone marker is a new granite marker. The stone directly behind John's original marker is illegible (possibly Sarah's original marker.) John was the first burial in this cemetery.

No pension papers have been found for John. This is not unexpected, as he died in 1814 and Sarah died in 1823, before many veterans or widows applied for pensions.
