According to the Ohio Historical Marker at the cemetery, Smith's Burying Ground/Burnside Cemetery was established in 1814 with the first burial being Revolutionary War veteran John Smith. Also buried here is Revolutionary War veteran John Clouse (d. 1822) and Julia Landon, sister-in-law of Noble Landon (co-founder of New Albany.)

The cemetery grounds are very well maintained, though several of the stones are broken and should be restored.
