The crowning glory of St. Bartholomew`s Church is its 14th century octagonal spire, built on top of the 12th century square tower. The rest of the building dates mostly from the 14th century. The design bears similarities to churches in Brittany, an area that the town had connections with when it was an active trading port. During the Civil War the interior was badly damaged & the font was said to have been used by Parliamentarian soldiers to baptise a horse!
