The Haiku Pathway is a riverside walk in the small town of Katikati, also known as the mural town, featuring boulders engraved with haiku. It is the largest collection of "haiku stones" in English in the world. Officially opened in June 2000 with 24 engraved boulders, the pathway by the end of 2007 had 30 poem boulders, with more planned.

The haiku, some written by New Zealanders, others by poets from Australia, the US, Canada, Japan, Poland and the UK, were carefully selected by Katikati poet Cath Mair to harmonise with the immediate environment.

The pathway meanders along both sides of the Uretara Stream just by behind the town’s main street and is popular with locals, as well as national and international visitors. It is a tranquil spot in the heart of a bustling, country town and features a specially designed footbridge across the stream.

The Pathway is in the centre of Katikati with entries off the Main St beside Mitre 10, behind the Information Centre, and opposite Twickenham Cafe.

Haiku are words which sing, words which paint pictures, small stories which expand each location, images which invite you to make up your own stories, poems which are the direct experience of a moment, tiny poems which are wonderfully large.
The pathway’s haiku were selected by Katikati poet Catherine Mair and have been engraved on to river boulders. The criteria for chosen poems was to reflect their surroundings. One example of the haiku:

katikati dawn
heron call from river mouth
raindrops on mural
