The USS South Dakota was one of six armoured cruisers built 1901 to 1908. She was launched June 21, 1904 and cruised mostly in the Pacific until 1916. The ship was transferred to the Atlantic during World War I returning to the Pacific in 1919. Renamed Huron (to free the South Dakota name to be used by a battleship) she served as flagship of the Asiatic Fleet.
The ship was decommissioned in 1927 and sold as scrap in 1930. The ship's bell survives in this mounting in Watertown.
