This blachawk stands outside the Hawk's Nest at Springs Valley High School in French Lick, Indiana. This gift was given by the 1958 Men's basketball team.
Springs Valley came together in 1957, French Lick High and West Baden High came together to form Springs Valley that year. The first year the school was in session they hired a coach named Rex Wells. He coached the young Blackhawks to the only undefeated season in school history. They went 18 - 0 in the regular season and made it all the way to the state finals getting beat by a team from Terre Haute. This historic story made the indiana high school basketball hall of fame being the only school to make it to the state finals in their first year.
Springs Valley is also the school in which, NBA Legend, Larry Bird, came from. He graduated from Springs Valley in 1974 to go on to Indiana University. But dropping out only a semester into school. He returns to French Lick and then to Terre Haute where he led his Indiana State Sycamores to the NCAA title game and losing to Magic Johnson and the Michigan State Spartians. Bird went on to win 3 championships with the Boston Celtics.
The Blackhawk Statue is a replica of the very original blackhawk, Coach Wells used that year. He was in contact with Walt Disney Studios to create the original design.
