Cedar county, one of the oldest Nebraska counties, was organized by the territorial legislature in 1857. Two other towns, close to the Missouri River, served as county seat until a 1885 election chose to move the county seat to the more centrally located, and railroad connected, town of Hartington. A few years later a bond issue was passed for a new courthouse and construction began on the present building in 1891.
The building is simplified Romanesque style in red brick with white stone trim. The brick was manufactured locally.
