The railway opened in 1875 for the purpose of carrying Iron Ore from workings near the village of Boot in Eskdale to the coast at Ravenglass, similar operations were run over the years until The Ravenglass and Eskdale preservation Society was formed in the early 60's and the line became a passenger carrying railway.
There are currently 4 steam locomotives which are in regular use on the line,The oldest locomotive being "The River Irt" which is the oldest 15 inch working steam locomotive in the world.
The line is very popular carrying about 125,000 people a year, lots of which will combine a walk with the train ride, for instance on the day of our visit we bought return tickets from Ravenglass and left the train at Eskdale Green station, and then walked to The final station of the line at Dalegarth a pleasant 3 miles away, where we boarded the train for the return to Ravenglass, spent a short while here before once again travelling the length of the line to Dalegarth and returning to Ravenglass, the reason for the 2 journeys is that return tickets allow freedom of the line which means you can travel up and down the seven miles as often as you like on the day of ticket.
Some good pics of the line here.
