"In the spring of 1974 Bishop Francis J. Green, of the Diocese of Tucson, made the request for a Christian renewal center to be established in Cochise County, the southeast corner of the diocese.
Abbot David Geraets, O.S.B. of the founding Benedictine Abbey, Pecos, New Mexico, asked Fr. Louis B. Hasenfuss O.S.B. to begin the project. He arrived in St. David from Albuquerque, accompanied by Paul Meuller and Steve Stevens, on September 3, 1974. They settled in on the 92 acres property. Maxine and Larry Lee, a married California couple, and Fr. Clark Moore, a Tucson Diocesan priest, were there with Marty Martinez. From this nucleus the Monastery grows today."
Today this Olivetan Benedictine monastery sits on 132 acres of land adjacent to the San Pedro River in Cochise County, AZ. Access is via Hwy 80 heading south out of the small town of St. David. The monastery is private property but the public is welcome. Along with some unique structures and buildings visitors can access birding and wildlife trails and an RV park. All visitors are welcome to join in daily prayer and eucharist if desired.
The photographs submitted for this waymark include two of the most prominent structures on the monastery grounds. The first is the Shrine of the True Cross located next to the gift shop. Due to its height (70 feet), this is likely the first thing you will see when approaching the monastery along Hwy 80. (If you have Google Earth enter the coordinates for this waypoint to see the shadow of the cross from space.) The second is the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. This beautiful little church is located across the road from the shrine but is hidden somewhat by vegetation.
