Furness General Hospital is a large, main hospital within the Morecambe Bay area. It links with Westmorland General at Kendal and the Royal Infirmary at Lancaster. Kendal doesn't have 24hr cover in some services so patients are transferred to either Lancaster or Barrow.
The proximity of the Lake District hills to the north of Barrow means that casualties helped by mountain rescue teams are often picked up by RAF SAR helicopters. This saves a long carry out of the hills to the nearest road, and a long ambulance drive down to Barrow.
The NW Air Ambulance also lands here bringing accident victims, especially those involved in road collisions. The heli-pad is consequently used quite frequently but is a fairly simple design.
The pad has low lights at each corner and a painted H. Apart from this it's just a strong piece of flat tarmac. A wide, flat path allows stretchers to be wheeled from the aircraft.
