James Smithson, Esq., F.R.S., M.A. (1765 Paris, France – 1829 Genoa, Italy), was a British mineralogist and chemist. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of London (1787). Smithson was noted for having left a bequest in his will to the United States, which was used to initially fund the Smithsonian Institution. His tomb is located in Mortuary Chapel in The Smithsonian Castle. His sarcophagus incorrectly states his age at his death as 75; he was in fact only 64.
