The geological time scale is defined using evidence from rocks and fossils deposited worldwide, the Ordovician age is approximately 505-440 million years ago, during the upper part of this period we have the epoch known as Ashgillian,438-448 million years ago,the name Ashgillian is derived from Ash Gill and the surrounding area where slate is found, dating to that period,a not widely known fact that has placed Cumbria and Ash gill in particular on the universal geological time scale map.
Ash Gill itself is dramatic in it's remote ruggedness and beauty , and can be reached only on foot,an excellent starting point would be the village of Torver, where a superb day's walking can be had visiting the Gill.
