Philip Gidley-King, son of a Launceston draper. was born at No. 5 Southgate Street on on 23 April 1758. He joined the Royal Navy at the age of 12 as captain's servant, and was commissioned as a lieutenant in 1778. King became the third Governor of New South Wales on 28 September 1800. He set about changing the system of administration, and appointed Major Joseph Foveaux as Lieutenant-Governor of Norfolk Island. It was in his honour that the daughter town of Launceston on the Tasmanian River Tamar was named.
