Cloyne Court, a massive wood-shingle-covered building oriented around a south-facing courtyard, was designed by John Galen Howard and constructed in 1904. It served as a hotel until 1946 when it was purchased by the University Student Co-operative Association (USCA), an alternative to the university dormitories. In 1970 it was sold under threat of eminent-domain acquisition to the UC Regents and leased back to the USCA. Despite having approximately 150 residents, it was, until recently, student managed.
