This County, created by Act of the Legislature Dec. 10, 1807, is named for Sergeant Jasper, Revolutionary hero from South Carolina who rescued some American prisoners from their British guards at Jasper Spring, near Savannah. When created, the county was named Randolph for John Randolph, Virginia statesman, whose later views on the War of 1812 made him impopular in Georgia and resulted in the changing of the name to Jasper by Act of Dec. 10, 1812. Subsequently a new county was named for Randolph in 1828.
