Rampside village has become a dormitory for Barrow in Furness, with many modern houses and bungalows lining the main street overlooking the sands of Morecambe Bay.
Set among newer buildings almost incongruously is the 16th century Rampside Hall, remarkable for a spectacular array of twelve chimneys side by side along the ridge of the roof,these are known locally as the twelve apostles.(source A.Wainwright)
The late 16th century Hall was originally the home of the Knipe family.
Local folklore has it that in the early 16th.century a young man wanted to marry,but the ladies father would only give his permission when the lad had built a house with 12 chimneys, the building was completed as requested and each wedding anniversary would see smoke ensuing from all the 12 chimneys.
