The First Settler of Lake Chautauqua
was Dr. Alexander McIntyre who erected here
his log cabin and stockade.

Here is the site of the first homestead in the area, built by Dr. Alexander McIntyre in 1804. He claimed the title 'Doctor' not for holding a medical license or degree but for being a Medicine Man, trained by the Seneca after he was captured as a boy.
The story is that Dr. McIntyre sold this property for a considerable sum after discovering a salt spring on the land, which was a precious commodity in those days that greatly increased the property value. Later, however, the spring lost is saltiness. Excavating of the well uncovered a near-empty buried keg of salt. His son, Alexander Jr. was said to have been the first white child born in the region.
