Originally granted to Sir Peter Colleton in 1679. Acquired in 1712 by Thomas Broughton, who erected thepresent mansion, said to be modeled after Seaton Hall in England, in 1714. Thomas Broughton was speaker of the Commons House of Assembly from 1726 to 1730 and Govenor from 1735 to 1737.
