A single-story building at the SE. corner of Fifth and Main Sts. covers
the approximate SITE OF DENNISON HOUSE, an early hostelry kept by William
Dennison. In 1822, when this location was virtually on the outskirts of
Cincinnati, hotel man Dennison set down these phonetic entries in his ledger:
Young man with aue began bord.
Settled acct. with cook paid her $1 week
2 men with munkey began bord Monday.
1 bottle beer 6 1/2¢
2 glasses whiskey 6 1/2¢
to boarding Mr. Hampson 3 weeks 1 day 5.50
young man and hors 1.00
Mch 31 -- William began scool a Mr. Wings.
May 2 -- left up going to school.
Jentlemen from Elenois on Sunday night.
Mr. Fallis, Cheesburow, 36 1/4 gallan whiskey at
28 cts. 10.22
Little Willie, with a month's scholarship behind him, may have taught his
father how to spell "scool," but spelling continued to be the enemy of that
estimable man. The Dennison House was more persevering; it withstood the
buffeting of time until 1932, when it was knocked down.~ from Cincinnati: A Guide to the Queen City and Its Neighbors,
1943, Tour 5, pg 181.
The corner is no longer occupied by a single story building instead it is
occupied by the 27 floor PNC Center constructed in 1979. Also on the
corner is the abstract kinetic sculpture Two Rectangles Vertical Gyratory II,
Variation IV by George Rickey.
