The Buffalo News began publication as a Sunday only newspaper in 1880. Seven years later it was one of several daily newspapers serving the Buffalo area. By 1914, they changed to a Monday-Saturday only publication and was known as The Buffalo Evening News. A competing newspaper, The Buffalo Courier-Express provided a morning newspaper.
In 1977, The Buffalo Evening News was bought and resumed publication of a Saturday and Sunday morning paper. The Courier-Express ceased operation in 1982, leaving just The News to serve the city. That same year, The Buffalo Evening News changed names back to The Buffalo News and began publishing both a morning and evening weekday paper, with morning weekend papers remaining. In October 2006, the News ceased production of an evening paper and now only provides a morning paper 7 days a week.
