Sequoya was an American Indian. Born near the Cherokee village of Tushkeegee in Tennessee, his birth date is estimated to be between 1760 and 1776. When he was born his given name was Nathanial Gist, but an accident caused him to be partially crippled and he was given the name "Sequoya" meaning pigs foot.

Later in life he married a Cherokee woman and moved to Cherokee County, GA. Here he enlisted and fought in the War of 1812. Though not able to read or write himself, he was intrigued by how white men could communicate by making marks on paper "talking leaves.". This inspired him to begin work in 1809 on a system for the Cherokee language to be written.

His journey led him to move to Arkansas and after many hardships and being ridiculed he finally completed the alphabet or syllabary. It was adopted by the Cherokee Nation in 1821.

In 1824 he was given a silver medal by the Cherokee National Council at New Echota, Georgia.
