Here, at the end First Street in Benicia is where the ferry picked up Pony Express trail and provided transportation across the Carquinez straits. This was long before the convenient Carquinez bridge between Vallejo and Crockett or the 680 bridge. Monument dedicated April 23, 2000.
Note: Downtown Benicia has a charming old-west feel. It makes for a pleasant summer afternoon visit when a nice breeze blows up the strait. Browse the antique stores here or stop in a cafe for a bite to eat.
