the building was constructed between 1912 and 1914 at a cost of $140,000.

"The building, originally known as the Commercial Travellers’ building, was constructed by the Calgary branch (established in 1905) of the Northwest Commercial Travellers Association of Canada. (NWCTA). Based in Winnipeg the NWCTA was founded in 1882 " to secure travelling and personal benefits for commercial travellers, manufacturers’ agents, sales executives and proprietors of wholesaling and distribution companies." Although the NWCTA created advisory boards in B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan in 1911, a group of Albertans formed a rival organization called the Alberta Commercial Travellers’ Association."From the Cornerstones Website of the Calgary Public Library (http://calgarypubliclibrary.com/calgary/historic_tours/corner/nwtravel.htm)
