U.S. 99 passes near the State Capitol buildings of Washington, Oregon and California. In Washington the former route, now called Capitol Way in this area, went directly past the Capitol Campus.

U.S. 99 passed by the historic Washington State Capitol campus on what is now called "Capitol Way." The highway connected the three capitols of America's West Coast: Olympia (Washington), Salem (Oregon), and Sacramento, (California).
Construction of the Washington State Capitol Campus and its 5 main historic buildings began in 1912 and ran through the early 1930's. The site plan for the campus grounds was designed by the Olmsted firm, famed for designs such as Central Park in New York, the US Capitol campus, and the 1893 Chicago fair grounds.
