This stone trimmed brick courthouse displays second Renaissance Rival style architecture. The architect, W. F. Gernandt, also designed the Courthouse in Phelps County, Nebraska. The courthouse occupies a large courthouse square near the main business district of Red Cloud.

Willa Cather, a Red Cloud native, in her novel "One of Ours" used this courthouse as a setting for immigrant trials. It was placed on the National Historical register in 1981.
