Description: Guillaume Apollinaire was born Wilhelm Albert Vladimir Apollinaris Kostrowitzky to a Polish mother in Italy. Throughout his life, he created a romantic identity for himself. He purposefully kept his lineage a secret, but his father was suspected to be an Italian guard or an aristocrat.
Among the foremost poets of the early 20th century, he is credited with coining the word surrealism. His play Les Mamelles de Tirésias (1917) is said to be one of the earliest surrealist plays.
Apollinaire was wounded in World War I and died at 38 of the Spanish flu during a pandemic.
