Hearst Greek Theater - Berkeley, California - U.S. National Register of Historic Places on Waymarking.com

The classically-inspired Hearst Greek Theater, designed by John Galen Howard and built in 1903, replaced an informal bowl that had been used for gatherings and events on the U.C. Berkeley Campus. The theater has been used extensively for graduation ceremonies for U.C. Berkeley and Berkeley High School, as well as music concerts and public events.
Performances and events have ranged the spectrum from the Dalai Lama to Talking Heads. In the 1970s and 1980s it was not uncommon to find the area overrun by tye-dye wearing "dead heads" who came to see regular performances by the Grateful Dead.
Although the theater is occasionally open to visitors, it has lately been fenced off to access.
