The old station boarding area still (or restored?) has benches under coverings where one can watch the trains go by and enjoy a beautiful view of downtown Pittsburgh across the river while waiting for them. There are also numerous places to get food or coffee to enjoy while viewing.
There is no fee to use the area, but you will have to pay for parking if you drive.
