Part of the provisions for each turnpike was a marker every mile and to mark all the parish boundaries. The number of toll collecting points were also limited so as not to impede travel too much. Each toll gate was leased on an annual rent, guaranteeing a fixed income for the trustees. The section between Keswick and Ambleside had no competition from boats on lakes nor the railways, and remained profitable throughout its life.

Now a private house which has been rendered and painted.
