The kiln is situated beside a large former quarry site and this may explain the unusual configuration. It may have been used to produce lime on a more commercial basis by the quarry owners. Unfortunately situated on the side of a busy road with no speed limit
The lime kiln was constructed probably in the period 1750 to 1850 to burn limestone in order to make lime for local use, to spread on the fields as a soil improver, to make mortar for construction and for many other uses. Locally sourced wood fuel was plentiful for the production of charcoal, used as fuel in the kilns for the burning of limestone.
Once the railway appeared lime production became uneconomic.
