This DC monastery is over 100 years old and is similar to the renowned catacombs in the Franciscan Monastery in Rome. Visitors may wander along the walkways in the gardens or choose a spot to sit down and relax. Guided tours of the underground catacombs are available. They take place on the hour, except at noon.
Fr.Godfrey Schilling O.F.M, envisioned the institution as a headquarters for this work in America & built the Monastery Church & Mount St. Sepulchre. It contains faithful replicas of the Holy Shrines in Jordan, Israel, Egypt, & Syria, reminders of the sufferings & victory of Our Lord & His Saints.
For this work the Commissariat of the Holy Land was established at the Monastery & it's Crusade for the Holy Land has a vast enrollment of workers & donors.
