The Land that has become How Tunn Woods was donated to the Woodland Trust by Barrow Borough Council, as part of the Trust's project to create 200 new woods in England and Wales to celebrate the millennium.

How Tun Woods (63 hectares) is bordered on the west by Ormsgill quarry, which is long since disused and has been nicely landscaped becoming a popular area for dogs to walk their humans. The woods can be entered from the east end of the old quarry.
HTW is on a flat, high and exposed site. It has been planted with Oaks, Ash, Birch, Rowan, Alder, Holly, Hazel, Hawthorn and Guelder rose.
Paths through the woods have been naturally developed as people cross from the woods to the playing fields of Thorncliff.
The above co-ords are the location of the northern entrance to the woods. There is a small free car park here and an information board which shows the work of the Woodland Trust, and explains how these woods came to be planted for the millennium.
